I want to find my way, but I don’t believe that I will. I feel very much like your Jeffrey (except, thank god, for the self-destruction). I read a story once where someone used the analogy of a compass to describe a person. That’s how I feel, like a compass with the needle spinning in circles. Except there is no north for me.Categories: I Have a Question On a Specific Subject, I'd Like Some Advice|Tags: Careers, Quinn's Motivations, Tribal| Read More
For almost all my life I’ve wanted no other career than teaching, but after reading My Ishmael, I’m very confused. I’d have to think, after reading this book, that you wouldn’t think much of me if I carried through on my plans to enter the school system as a teacher. Or am I missing your point?Categories: Here's My Opinion; What's Yours?, I Need Some Clarification|Tags: Careers, Education, Evolution, Revolution| Read More
I want to find out about more places like Sudbury Valley and more people like those that run Interface or the Gesundheit Institute. I think that if people heard more about how others have been living what Ishmael has been talking about, it might jumpstart the ideas that are waiting to be found in each of us. Is there a list of other inspiring innovators that I can look into?Categories: I Have a Question On a Specific Subject, I'd Like Some Advice|Tags: Careers, Quinn's Motivations| Read More
I’ve come across many people, including myself at times, that are so dissatisfied with Taker culture, from which there is no immediate escape, that life is unbearable. It is evident from your books that you’re aware of this. I’m a teen now and have no desire to enter this literally damned Taker culture. But there is no Leaver culture accessible to me, except the one that I may help create in the future. Question is, what can be said now to appease the pain, the despondency, the unbearableness? I see kids at school committing and plotting suicide, I hear kids saying how much this sucks, but what can be said to them? Is there an answer? What would Ishmael say to the depressed captives as we are pulling at the bars of this god damned prison?Categories: Here's My Opinion; What's Yours?, I Have a Question On a Specific Subject, I'd Like Some Advice|Tags: Careers, Education, Evolution, Priorities, Revolution| Read More
I’m finishing my graduate work in educational leadership. I’ve always felt that becoming a principal (leader and supporter) to others was what I was chosen to do. After reading both Ishmael and My Ishmael I am really confused on how to do this effectively. I want to become an Ishmael principal. Any suggestions on how best to accomplish this enormous feat? I want to make a difference for the world, myself, and for my children.Categories: I Have a Question On a Specific Subject, I'd Like Some Advice|Tags: Careers, Education, Evolution, Revolution| Read More
I have a close friend who will be going off to the Peace Corps very soon. It seems to me that the Peace Corps spreads Mother Culture’s whisperings where they don’t belong much as missionaries spread religion in “primitive” cultures. My chosen profession has begun to look like “part of the problem” rather than “part of the solution.” I’m beginning to feel obliged to abandon it, as a matter of conscience. Do you see it this way?Categories: I'd Like Some Advice|Tags: Careers| Read More
